Have We Been Lied To About Gore-Tex Via Madison Avenue Marketing Schemes?
I just saw this video from FortNine on YouTube that blew me away on what I believed to be true since 2013 when I was first introduced to Gore-Tex motorcycle gear. Gore-Tex is W. L. Gore & Associates’s trade name for waterproof, breathable fabric membrane. It was invented in 1969. Gore-Tex blocks liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through and is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof fabric for all-weather use. It is composed of expanded PTFE (ePTFE), a stretched out form of the PFAS compound polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Gore-Tex products free of “PFC of environmental concerns” repellent coating lacks the ability to repel oil that “Gore DWR” provided. Now RyanF9 uses science to explain how Gore-Tex works and why you’re being ripped off. Send your hate mail to [email protected] “NOT” Gabe!
Gore-Tex for Bikers: The Waterproof and Breathable Debate
As a biker, you’re no stranger to the elements. Rain, wind, and the open road are all part of the thrill. Yet, when it comes to gear, the promise of staying dry and comfortable is often met with skepticism, particularly around technologies like Gore-Tex. Is it truly the holy grail of motorcycle clothing, or is it a case of clever marketing over substance? Let’s dive into the reality of Gore-Tex, especially for bikers who demand both breathability and waterproofing in their gear.
The Dual Promise: Breathable OR Waterproof?
The Dual Promise: Breathable OR Waterproof?
Many riders, including myself, have been swayed by the allure of Gore-Tex, believing it to be the solution to staying dry without overheating. However, the truth is that while Gore-Tex offers both breathability and waterproofing, it’s a balancing act. When you’re caught in a downpour and pushing your limits, you might find yourself “boiling in the bag,” so to speak. The material is indeed breathable and waterproof, but not simultaneously in extreme conditions.
The Biker’s Benefit: Windproofing and Comfort
The Biker’s Benefit: Windproofing and Comfort
Despite its limitations, Gore-Tex stands out for its windproof qualities. For bikers, this is a game-changer. The technology significantly reduces, if not eliminates, wind chill, ensuring you stay warm inside your gear. Its breathability also means that sweat can evaporate through the fabric, preventing overheating and sweat build-up, which are common concerns during a long ride.
Considerations and Alternatives
Considerations and Alternatives
While Gore-Tex is revered for its performance, it comes with a high price tag and specific care requirements. Proper washing and drying are crucial to maintain its functionality. For those looking for alternatives, the eVent membrane emerges as a strong competitor, especially in terms of breathability, though it matches Gore-Tex in other aspects like durability and waterproofing.
One of Gore-Tex’s unique selling points is its lifetime waterproof guarantee, a testament to its quality and the strict standards imposed on products incorporating this technology. This assurance, coupled with its performance, makes Gore-Tex a recommended choice despite its cost.
The Science of Staying Dry and Comfortable
The Science of Staying Dry and Comfortable
What sets Gore-Tex apart from other waterproof materials is its breathable membrane. This design ensures that while external water is kept out, internal moisture from perspiration can escape. This balance is critical for comfort during rides, preventing the unpleasant “greenhouse” effect experienced with less advanced materials.
Real-World Testing
Real-World Testing
The motorcycle gear review channel FortNine provides valuable insights by testing various waterproof materials, from premium Gore-Tex to budget options like Frogg Toggs. Through rigorous testing, including a pressurized water penetration test and a breathability assessment, the results are telling. Gore-Tex excels in waterproofing, proving its worth for keeping riders dry. However, when it comes to breathability, more budget-friendly options like Scott take the lead.
The Verdict
The Verdict
For bikers navigating the compromise between staying dry and staying comfortable, Gore-Tex presents a solid, though not perfect, solution. Its windproof and waterproof qualities are unparalleled, making it ideal for combating the elements. Yet, in terms of breathability, there’s room for improvement. The market offers alternatives like eVent for those prioritizing breathability, but Gore-Tex’s lifetime guarantee and overall performance make it a worthy investment for serious riders.
In the quest for the perfect motorcycle gear, it seems you do get what you pay for. Whether it’s Gore-Tex or another brand, investing in quality gear tailored to your needs and riding conditions is crucial. As always, the right balance will depend on your personal preferences, riding style, and the specific challenges you face on the road.
